Our daughter has just started her beach volleyball season and recently attended a nutrition seminar. Her dad and I decided to join her and we are so glad we did. She is 12 now and has probably not given much thought to nutrition because she is blessed with an amazing metabolism. She and her sister can eat just about anything and not have any regrets later… unlike their mother
So, when her coach started making a green smoothie to show the girls how easy and beneficial greens are in your diet, I thought they might have lost her. I know greens are extremely important in your daily diet, but I never gave it too much thought. I always included a vegetable with our dinners. But, the amount you need on a daily basis is more than a spoonful of corn with dinner. Go here to read about daily requirements. I guarantee that you will be surprised and like most of you, I was overwhelmed by this fact.
Enter the green smoothie. Her volleyball coach told us that drinking an 8 oz. glass of her daily homemade green smoothie over the past year has changed her life. I chuckled a bit to myself… seriously, a smoothie changed your life? Then, I looked at my daughter who seemed kind of excited about this and I decided to give it a shot. We stopped at the market on the way home.
I started making a blender full each night since our seminar and put it in the fridge for everyone to have each morning (they are much better cold) and I am a believer. Chuckle to yourself now… then, go out to your local market and find some of these veggies & fruit and make one. Try it each day for a week with your family and tell me if you don’t notice a difference.
Here is what we have been using in our smoothies. I don’t measure anything, except the coconut water so we don’t overflow. I blend the coconut water and greens first. Then, I add the fruit & extras.
Try some of these and go heavy on the greens:
Coconut water (about 12-16 oz)
Little bit of juice for sweetness (apple, grapefruit, mango)
Kale
Romaine leaves
Spinach
Bok choy
Cucumber
Avocado (pealed & pitted, of course)
Banana
Apple
Blueberries
Pineapple
Strawberries
Ginger
Cinnamon
Honey

I hear garlic is a great addition, but we drink ours in the morning and don’t want to smell like garlic all day… If you drink yours at night or don’t mind the taste of garlic lingering all day long, add it. Maybe brush your teeth pretty thoroughly afterwards
Have a green day!!
Jen
